What psychological disorder is the film dealing with?
This film is dealing with Bipolar Manic Depression. It is an disorder in which a person has extreme mood swings. They can go from feeling very sad, helpless, worthless, and hopeless to feeling hyperactive and as if they are the best in the world. This disorder is called bipolar disorder because the mood of a person can alternate between two completely opposite moods : euphoric happiness and extreme sadness. Mr. Jones, the main character of the movie, shows drastic changes of the mood. For example, in the begining of the movie, Jones looked like a normal guy who was enjoying his life ; he gave money to his companion in the construction site, dance in the middle of the street and talking fastly with a big smile on his face. However, he also did many attempt to commit suicide and unconsciously showed his temper and got depressed when he was alone. For instance, he constantly walked down the roof of the construction site, trying to catch the airplane, saying that he wants to 'fly'. Observing the ironical behavior of Jones' actions, Elizabeth, a psychatric doctor concluded that he has a manic depression.

There are many factors of Bipolar disorder. It can be divided among 3 main factors : genetic, neurochemical and environmental factors. In the movie, Jones' disorder was caused by neurochemical factor and the environmental factor. In the video which Elizabeth used to record Jones' behavior, Mr. Jones told her that he ate 73 asprins( strong tylanols) during his college years that he never had a headache. Also, he always possesed Lithium with him, one of the drug that stabilze his mood. I found out in my research that other drugs such as divalproex(Depakote), carbamezapine (Tegretol, Tegretol XR, Equetro, Carbatrol), and lamotrigine can be useful in treating active symptoms of manic or mixed episodes.
Jones' disorder can also be explained by environmental factors. It was caused by his old wife, Ellen Ryan, who left Jones during their marriage years ; Mr.Jones believed that she was dead for his entire life with . I think that her departure made him depress and not acknowledge his reality. Within the movie, I saw Jones talking about Ellen whenever the classical music came out ; he played piano well and was so excited when the music show started that he went up to the stages and conduct by himself. This was later revealed that he and Ellen used to love classical music and many composers such as Mozart and Bethoven.
According to the research, Bipolar manic depression have symptoms of poor judgment and denial that everything is wrong and much more. Mr.Jones' main symptoms to summarize, was commiting many suicidal behaviors, showing his temper unconsiously and having low and highs.

This disorder can be treated by taking madicine and having psychotherapies, discussing about his behaviors and getting help from them. In the movie, Jones had psychotherapy with Elizabeth by having Talk Therapy with her. Although Jones tried to escape from hospital and not listen to the doctor, he later noticed how important and helpful it is to tell his pain to the doctor.

The reason why I chose this film is because of the trailer. After watching many trailers of different movies, I felt like all the movies seem hard for me to understand or to contain disorders that are unfamiliar with me. However, I liked how the trailer showed both bad and good mood swings which made me curious to find out the reason behind his behaviors.
My assessment of my work done and why I should receive the grade I want.
This project was very fun, different from the projects which I have done before. I really had fun watching the movie that I tried to understand Jones' behaviors and felt pity for him as the movie progressed. Although it took time to watch the full movie, do research and analyze my observations, I feel proud from finshing this task that I felt like I was a doctor! Also, I thought this project was good for summarizing many disorders that we covered in class and actually use in real life.

Depth of work done /15 Reason for grade: I think I included many stories that happened in movie and some research about the disorder.
